STEM Challenge #4
Egg Drop Challenge
Welcome to Week 4 of the Affreej STEM Challenge Series!
This week, channel your inner aerospace engineer — design a protective device that keeps a raw egg safe during a high drop. It’s a crash-course in energy absorption, impact forces, and creative problem-solving.
🧰 Materials
You can use any or all of the following:
- Straws
- Tape
- Cotton
- Rubber Bands
- Plastic Bags
- Cardboard (small pieces)
- Scissors
- Raw Egg (room-temperature)
📏 Challenge Rules
Design a device that:
- Uses only the materials listed
- Protects a raw egg dropped from at least 2 meters (chair/ladder/balcony edge with adult supervision)
- Can be demonstrated in a short video or photo (show the uncracked egg after impact)
- Is built within 20 minutes
🔍 Get Inspired
Think like an engineer!
Consider cushioning (to absorb impact), crumple zones, parachutes (plastic-bag drag), and how to distribute force away from the egg. Test small drops first and iterate quickly.

📸 Share Your Work
Upload a photo or video of your device, the drop, and the egg inspection in the comments under this post. Include a quick note on your design choices and what you’d change next time.
⚠️ Safety Note
Always drop in an open area, away from people and breakables. Ask an adult to help if using a ladder or balcony.
